Review: Dell D Series LED-Lit Monitor D3218HN

In this review, we will look at the Dell D Series D3218HN Led Monitor. Amongst all, we will discuss viewing angle, the IPS technology, bundled components, and port compatibility.

Dell is a well-renowned brand of computer equipment and this is a sleek and modern monitor that adds a sophisticated style to your computer setup.

Viewing Angle

The viewing angle of this monitor is larger than most other similar models in this category. In fact, it is the size of a smaller television screen at 31.5”. The resolution is also up to par with modern standards at 1920X1080. Aspect ratio of 16:9 means you get a wide view of the images displayed on the monitor. This can be a drawback for those that are wanting a monitor that they can use for portrait mode.

What do you get with it?

The purchase of this monitor will get you the monitor itself with the stylish stand. It also includes a power cable, VGA cable, CD with the drivers loaded on to it, and a quick set up guide with safety information.

IPS technology

This Dell D3218HN monitor uses IPS technology. IPS is one of the four categories of LCD monitors. That is one thing I’d like to clarify is that this monitor is not true LED it is only LED-lit. The difference between the two terms is that LED-lit is a display where white light is first diffused before shattering into RGB light. In other words, LED monitors generate colors directly whereas LED backlit monitors generate the colors indirectly. The process of filtering the light is the main technological difference. LED monitors are more expensive in the ‘lit’ version and you’ll notice the warmth and responsiveness of the emitted lights are different.

IPS stands for in-plane switching, and they are great if you require a rich color display. They were created mainly due to the inefficiency of the TN monitor panel because the liquid crystals ability to shift horizontally was not allowing for the best viewing angle. As a result, with the IPS you get a wider viewing angle and great color performance.

The monitor itself is 60Hz refresh rate and a 4ms response time. Pixilation may be an issue if you sit close to the screen which may or not be another issue if you have glasses.

Contrast ratio is 1200:1 and the greater the contrast ratio is the greater the color density. 1200:1 is a good number as we usually need to look for monitors above the 1000:1 mark.

Ports and Slots

There is 1 slot for a HDMI 1.4 receptacle. It could have been beneficial to have another HDMI receptacle but because the price is budget friendly, I believe Dell decided to leave out the extra slot.

There is a VGA port which stands for video graphics array connector. It is the blue or black headed cable that have two screws on the side that you need to tighten. VGA is a pretty common connector so it’s nothing new.

You can use a VESA mounting system to mount this monitor to the wall which is a bonus. The tilt is between 5 and 10 degrees either direction.

Other Features

The power consumption of this monitor is normal for those expected in its class at 45 watts. Furthermore, there aren’t built in speakers with this monitor, so you’ll need to plugin your audio device. Its capable of displaying a depth of up to 16.7 million colors which is one the main selling points for this monitor with its high-grade color performance.

There are 6 total buttons on the monitor which are for the OSD menu, led indicator, power, selection, and scrolling.

 Conclusion

This monitor is ideal for those buyers that are looking for a budget friendly option but do not want to sacrifice performance and style. The Dell LED-lit monitor uses IPS technology to provide a wide screen viewing angle and supports HDMI, VGA, and VESA mounting. If you need rich color display such as for watching videos and movies, then this is a great option. Gaming is also possible but anything beyond casual performance should not be expected.
